Do I Need a Videographer?

If you’re newly engaged (congratulations btw!) and planning a wedding, you may find yourself overwhelmed with the sheer volume of decisions to be made. When it comes to planning out your budget, you may start to wonder what the necessities are as opposed to the “nice-to-have” extras. You may be asking, “I already have a photographer, do I really need a videographer too?” Hopefully we can help you answer this one - of the no doubt many - questions you have right now!

There are a lot of great photographers who are amazing to work with, and who will provide you with some special snapshots throughout the day. These photos can be lots of fun to look back on and reminisce for years to come. However, there are some things that photographs fundamentally just can’t do, that only video can.

Do you want to remember what your partner, on their wedding day, sounded like as they read you their tender vows? Do you want to remember the way your dress flowed as you walked down the aisle, or the way your hair moved as your groom ran his hand down your cheek after your first kiss? Do you want to remember the sound of your grandmother’s laughter? Or the sound of your father’s voice as he gave a teary toast to you and your new future?

While photography is no doubt an important part of any wedding, these are things that photos are simply incapable of capturing, no matter how talented or expensive your photographer is. (Don’t get me wrong, photographers are great and you should definitely hire one!) But only a well thought out wedding video can provide you with the captured memories and emotions of certain aspects of your big day.

Even as your parents - or grandparents - get older, and you start to recognize that you won’t always have them around, you can look back on your wedding film and remember their encouragement, their laughter, their voice. You’ll never forget what your father’s voice sounded like as he gave you away on that day. Or what amazing story your grandfather shared at the reception, that had everyone in tears. Or your mother’s warmth and emotion as she helped you do up the finishing touches on your dress. Or even the hilarious speech that your best friend gave that had everyone roaring in laughter. And if you hire the right videographer, you’ll have a beautiful family heirloom that lasts the test of time, and is still captivating when showing your kids and grandkids what your wedding day looked like, sounded like, and felt like.

Your wedding day goes by so quickly and will be a blur to look back on! It’s fun, it’s emotional, and it flashes by in the blink of an eye. There’s no doubt that you simply won’t be able to take in everything that’s happening on your wedding day, much less remember it all. But if you hire a professional videographer that you trust to capture all the special moments, you can relax and enjoy your day knowing that you’ll not only have another perspective to relive it from, but also a chance to go back and watch all the special little moments that you missed.

Your moments only happen once, but you can relive the feeling many times over as long as your videographer captures it for you. This is the most stressful part of a videographer’s job, knowing that if they miss it, it will never happen again. The quality videographers can not only tolerate this pressure but also handle the stress in a way that still allows them to be fun to be around, and a calm presence for any stressful moments that may (and surely will!) arise. This is why it’s important to hire a professional and qualified videographer that you not only trust but actually like as well. This person will have the responsibility of catching the special moments, and the honour of hanging out with you all day. You want to be able to trust that they’ll catch everything and also that you’ll enjoy spending time with them on your wedding day. In this regard, the old axiom “you get what you pay for” definitely stands true.

Because every person is different, every couple is different as well. That’s what makes having a wedding video so special. You get to document and showcase your wedding day in a way that is uniquely you. Each wedding videographer will have their own unique style, and you’ll find that you connect with certain types, whether their style is beautiful, emotional and story-driven or fun, snappy and upbeat.

If you hire a professional that you like being around, trust to be reliable and competent, and who compliments your personal style, then you’ll be sure to be happy you decided to invest in preserving your memories of your special day.

If you’d like to hire a wedding videographer, or would simply like to know more, we'd love to hear from you!
